Coding the Russian alphabet for the purpose of mechanical translation

چکیده
It is well known that there is in Russian a phonological opposition between palatalized and non-palatalized consonants (or, in the traditional terminology, between “soft” and “hard” consonants). This palatalization is marked in the Russian orthography by the use of one of the set of “soft” vowels or by the special “soft sign” according to whether the palatalized consonant is followed by a vowel or not. This immediately suggests the possibility of replacing the “soft” vowels by the “soft sign” + the corresponding “hard” vowels. Thus “Я” would be transformed into *ЬА, “Ю” into *ЬУ, etc. Furthermore, the “soft sign” and the letter Й are in complementary distribution, the “soft sign” being written after a consonant and Й being written after a vowel. They may therefore be regarded as “allographs” of the same “grapheme” and represented by the same symbol, Ь. The transformations suggested so far are listed here for convenience:

A refinement in coding the Russian Cyrillic alphabet
By reducing the number of characters to be coded the problem of devising a numerical code for the Cyrillic alphabet can be simplified. This reduction can be achieved by providing code-words for only the lower-case forms of characters that do not occur initially; by disregarding the diacritic of the character ё, and by disregarding the character ё entirely. Ambiguities that arise in the latter c...
متن کاملTranslation of Russian technical literature by machine
The Russian alphabet, the Russian words encountered in scientific and technical material and the Russian grammar differ greatly from their English counterparts. In order to read scientific or technical Russian, it is necessary to have the meaning of a large number of Russian words stored in the memory. In translating Russian, the corresponding English words must be supplied by the memory accura...

Abstract One of the broad areas of research in traditional comparative literature is the study of the influence of one poet on another in a different culture. The translator is a mediator between the two poets, and any study of literary influences in the realm of comparative literature would be irrelevant if the role of the translator a...

متن کاملDictionary of Abstract and Concrete Words of the Russian Language: A Methodology for Creation and Application
The paper describes the first stage of a project on creating an electronic dictionary with numerical estimates of the degree of abstractness and concreteness of Russian words. Our approach is to integrate data obtained from several different sources: text corpora, psycholinguistic experiments, published dictionaries, markers of abstractness (certain suffixes) and a translation of a similar dict...
